This three-cabin retreat, built on 54 acres of wilderness, is located between the towns of Wilkesboro and Boone, just five miles from the entrance to the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway.

Each two-story cabin, built from fragrant western red cedar, offers two bedrooms, two baths, living room and kitchen. A favorite with guests is the private heated spa on the covered porch of each cabin. Offering a scenic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains abloom in dogwood and magnolia.

Spring may be the most splendid time of the year to enjoy this peaceful getaway (though some skiers may debate that).

"We fell in love with the streams, waterfalls and wildlife on the property when we found it six years ago," said proprietor Beverly Thompson of Miami, Fla. "This time of year is my favorite because everything is in bloom - the pink and white dogwoods are everywhere and the magnolia smells so wonderful."

She and her husband, Tim, saved money from their Miami jobs to build the cedar cabins of Fall Creek, which opened in 1992. They hope to move to the area soon after the birth of their first child next month.

Fall Creek offers outdoor sports enthusiasts a chance to hike or fish for delicious rainbow trout. More than 1,600 feet of a state-designated trout stream fronts the Fall Creek property. The stream is stocked every two weeks, starting in April, for about six months; once a month during the rest of the year.

That means the odds of landing "the big one" are pretty good - well worth the price of the required fishing license with trout stamp. This may be purchased at any local bait/tackle shop.

For those who prefer boating, swimming or water skiing, W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is just 12 miles from Fall Creek, offering 55 miles of shoreline and nine boat accesses.

Golfers have their choice of four 9- hole and eight 18-hole courses nearby. If stock car racing is your cup of tea, the North Wilkesboro Speedway hosts a number of NASCAR events, attracting the sport's top drivers.

Of course, there's the area's quaint antique stores and the wonderful country restaurants. But the beauty of a vacation at Fall Creek is that guests never have to leave the property to enjoy themselves.

Each cabin is built far enough apart to afford privacy. Each offers all of the amenities of a modern home, including a washer/dryer and kitchen equipped with dishwasher, microwave and utensils.

Unlike many other vacation rentals, Fall Creek Cabins provides linens, firewood, barbecue grills and even a VCR.

All cabins have oak and pine furnishings and hardwood floors. Each is decorated in a different decor: Serenity Ridge offers a peaceful rose and raspberry color scheme, Blueberry Hideaway has a tranquil country blue scheme; and Mountain Laurel is in a restful country green.

All the guests have to do is pack their bags and come to Fall Creek Cabins for that special spring or summer vacation.
