Fall Creek Cabins: Mountain cabins offer retreat
The Herald Sun Raleigh Extra, Sunday, July 17, 1994
| If its mountains its skiing, right? Not necessarily. North Carolinas mountains are among the most beautiful and the oldest in the world. And if theres one thing any mountains, but especially these mountains offer, is peace, quiet, solitude and a deeper appreciation of natures brilliance and beauty. Among the many ways to experience these mountains, the cabins at Fall Creek between Wilkesboro and Boone have to top the list. The dream and passion of Tim and Beverly Thompson, these cabins are select, rustic but comfortable and secluded. There are only three, all two-story, all nestled among the trees and coves on 54 acres of wilderness, just five miles form the Blue Ridge Parkway. Each cabin is built from western red cedar and offers two bedrooms, two baths, a living room and kitchen. Each has a heated spa on the covered porch, each offers a spectacular view of the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Unlike many rental cabins, here you will find amenities you are accustomed to: washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, kitchen utensils, linens, firewood, barbecue grill, even a VCR. Besides taking a load off your feet, whats there to do? Try hiking the wilderness near your cabin or trout fishing in the state-designed stream that fronts the property 1600 feet of trout stream stocked every two weeks. Chances are, youll get a pretty good hit when you get your line wet. Required fishing license and stamps can be bought at nearby bait and tackle shops. Or drive just12 miles to W. Kerr Scott Dam & Reservoir for swimming, boating and water skiing. Or golf on any of four 9-hole or eight 18-hole courses in our area. Or maybe its stock car racing. Find that in North Wilkesboro where NASCAR drivers regularly compete. Then theres always just poking around in area antique and gift shops, or just soaking up the culture of the North Carolina mountains. Each of the three cabins has their own personality. All have oak and pine furnishings and hardwood floors. However, each has its own unique décor. Serenity Ridge embraces you with war rose and raspberry colors. Blueberry Hideaway offers a peaceful country blue. Mountain Laurel invites you into native-feeling country green. Any way you slice it, Fall Creek offers lots of activity, or lots of just plain peace and quiet. Thats a hard combination to beat. So pack your bags and forget the rest and spend a few days at Fall Creek Cabins. Find them about 37 miles from I-77, one mile off U.S. 421.
